Barbie

To tell my stories, I need moulds to enable me to make play with the assembling process.

I have had the great good fortune of twice being allowed into two institutions (Sèvres and the collection of Samson, a sculptor who worked for Sèvres and other factories in the late 19th century) and thus being able to use historic moulds. The subtlety of their volumes is fascinating, and I still hope one day to be able to do "mixes" of other moulds in other historic factories. But these national institutions are very tightly controlled, and it's not easy to get in.

While I live in hope that one day these boxes of treasure will open up, boxes in cardboard of Barbie and Ken have provided me with a basic functional vocabulary. Other casts from other origins add to my possibilities for composition.

As each component is independent, I can mount the torso of a Barbie with the legs of a Ken, or the torso of a Ken with the bottom of another cast taken from another discovery, found from browsing either the Deshoulières collection or second-hand stores.  I assemble all these things to embody the images I want to bring to life.
