Du 17 avril au 3 septembre, je suis invité à prendre part à la Biennale internationale de céramiques de Châteauroux, dans le très bel ensemble du Couvent des Cordeliers et dans le musée. C'est dans une salle de ce musée établi dans l'ancien Hôtel Bertrand (grand maréchal du palais de Napoléon), que l'on m'a demandé d'intervenir en jouant sur la figure de Napoléon.
J'y ai travaillé à nouveau avec plaisir un bon mois durant, perchant le plus haut possible (1,7 m) des portraits bousculés de Napoléon, des pièces que j'ai traitées cette fois, en biscuit de porcelaine pour trancher sur ce riche décor très coloré.
L'installation de ces 24 pièces est intitulée Surélévation démocratique. Au delà du stratège militaire, Napoléon reste pour moi également, dans ses contradictions, un efficace propagateur des idées du siècle des lumières (Code civil, système métrique, baccalauréat, etc) en dépassement de l'organisation sociale de l'ancien régime des monarchies européennes - qui d'ailleurs firent coalition contre lui.

From 17 April to 3 September, I took part in the Châteauroux international ceramics biennial, in the very attractive Couvent des Cordeliers complex, and in the museum as well. I was asked to produce some work based on Napoleon for a show in the museum, which is housed in the former Hôtel Bertrand. (Henri Bertrand was the Grand Marshal to Napoleon's palace.)
I thoroughly enjoyed working on this subject again for a good month, raising topsy-turvy portraits of Napoleon as high as possible (up to 1 m 70) – pieces that I produced this time in porcelain biscuit, to make them really stand out against this colourful, lavish setting.
The installation, made up of these 24 pieces, was entitled Surélévation démocratique ("Democratic heightening"). Apart from his military strategy, I also think of Napoleon, with all his contradictions, as an effective propagator of the ideas of the Enlightenment – the Civil Code, the metric system, the Baccaleureate, and so on – going far beyond the social structure of the Ancien Régime of European monarchies. These, incidentally, formed coalitions with him.
